This is an English-first collection of stories from premodern China, with complete Simplified Chinese and Japanese editions. “Premodern” includes the Ming and Qing periods; the date of a surviving text is not necessarily the date when a story began.

Our love collection explores relationships in historical writing, literature, poetry, and folklore. Our mythology collection explores deities, creatures, creation accounts, classical texts, and festivals. Each collection has its own subject and website.

The opening collection is a reading edition, not an academic critical edition. Articles use original retellings and explanatory context, with links to sources so you can continue exploring.
